Taxes and fees for Detroit car buyers
Here’s what Detroit buyers should expect on a dealer purchase. Rates were checked against official sources in October 2026 and can change, so confirm with your local office before you buy.
- Sales tax: Detroit’s rate is Michigan’s flat 6%, because Michigan does not allow city or local sales taxes. Your 2026 trade-in reduces the taxable price by up to $12,000.
- How Michigan taxes vehicles: Michigan charges a flat 6% sales or use tax on a vehicle purchase. The state does not allow cities, counties, or other local units to add a sales tax, so the rate is the same everywhere in Michigan.
- Trade-in credit: Yes, but with a cap: for 2026, Michigan reduces the taxable price by the agreed trade-in value or $12,000, whichever is less. The cap rises $1,000 each January 1, and once it would exceed $14,000 (in 2029), the full trade-in value becomes credited.
- Dealer doc fees: Michigan caps the dealer documentary preparation fee at $280 or 5% of the vehicle’s cash price, whichever is less. The state adjusts the cap for inflation every two years, and the $280 figure was set in January 2025.
- Title and registration: The title fee is $15, and you have 15 days from the sale to transfer the title or pay a $15 late fee. Registration for a 1984 or newer vehicle is figured from its MSRP (the ad valorem fee), and the fee drops by a percentage each year for three years; a standard plate costs $5 the first time, and electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles pay an extra $267 or $113.
Registration and inspections in Wayne County
Where to title: Title and register at any Michigan Secretary of State office, where you can book a visit online or by calling 888-767-6424. Dealers usually handle the paperwork for you..
Inspections: Detroit has no safety or emissions inspection. The emissions testing once planned for Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb counties was never implemented.
Good to know in Detroit
- You need proof of Michigan no-fault insurance to title and register a car.
- Secretary of State self-service stations, including some at Kroger and Meijer stores, handle registration renewals.
- Michigan’s lemon law covers defects reported within the warranty term or 1 year from delivery, whichever comes first. A car is presumed a lemon after 4 or more repair attempts for the same defect within 2 years of the first attempt, or 30 or more days out of service in the first year or warranty term.
Buying from another state
If you buy out of state and register the car in Michigan, you pay Michigan’s 6% use tax to the Secretary of State when you title it. Michigan credits sales or use tax legally due and paid to another state at the time of purchase. We handle the logistics and make sure the dealer’s paperwork matches your home state’s rules.
What it costs
Our service is a flat fee: $900 for Standard Concierge, $1,000 with trade-in help, and $1,200 for luxury vehicles over $120,000. You’ll know the total up front. See pricing for details.
