Taxes and fees for Cincinnati car buyers

Here’s what Cincinnati buyers should expect on a dealer purchase. Rates were checked against official sources in October 2026 and can change, so confirm with your local office before you buy.

  • Sales tax: Hamilton County residents pay 7.8% (5.75% state plus 2.05% county). In Ohio, a trade-in reduces the tax only on a new-vehicle purchase.
  • How Ohio taxes vehicles: Ohio charges 5.75% state sales tax plus the county rate for your county of residence, not the dealer’s county. It’s collected by the county Clerk of Courts title office.
  • Trade-in credit: Only on new vehicles. A trade-in reduces the taxable price when you buy new, but not when you buy used.
  • Dealer doc fees: Ohio caps doc fees at the lesser of an inflation-adjusted amount (recalculated each year) or 10% of the contract price, and the fee must be stated in writing.
  • Title and registration: Titles are issued by county Clerk of Courts offices. The title fee is $18 in most counties. If a dealer hasn’t gotten a title in your name within 40 days, you have the right to cancel the deal.

Registration and inspections in Hamilton County

Where to title: Hamilton County Clerk of Courts title office.

Inspections: Hamilton County isn’t an E-Check county, so there’s no emissions test. E-Check emissions testing applies only in seven northeast Ohio counties.

Good to know in Cincinnati

  • Buy across the river in Kentucky and you still pay Ohio tax at the Hamilton County rate when you title in Ohio.
  • A vehicle with an out-of-state title needs an out-of-state VIN inspection.
  • Ohio’s lemon law covers new vehicles for the first 12 months or 18,000 miles.

Buying from another state

If you buy out of state, you pay Ohio tax at your home-county rate when you title. Vehicles with out-of-state titles need a VIN inspection. We handle the logistics and make sure the dealer’s paperwork matches your home state’s rules.

What it costs

Our service is a flat fee: $900 for Standard Concierge, $1,000 with trade-in help, and $1,200 for luxury vehicles over $120,000. You’ll know the total up front. See pricing for details.
