Taxes and fees for Kansas City car buyers
Here’s what Kansas City buyers should expect on a dealer purchase. Rates were checked against official sources in October 2026 and can change, so confirm with your local office before you buy.
- Sales tax: You’ll pay 4.225% Missouri state tax plus the Kansas City local rate for your home address. Because tax follows your residence, buying from a suburban or Kansas dealer doesn’t avoid the city rate.
- How Missouri taxes vehicles: Missouri charges 4.225% state sales tax plus local sales tax. The local rate is based on your home address when you title the vehicle, not where you buy it.
- Trade-in credit: Yes. Your trade-in reduces the taxable amount, including on out-of-state purchases if you bring proof of the trade.
- Dealer doc fees: Missouri caps the dealer administrative fee at a CPI-adjusted maximum, which is $620.79 for 2026. It must be itemized, labeled as not an official fee, and charged the same to every retail customer.
- Title and registration: You have 30 days to title at any Missouri license office. The late penalty starts at $25 and can reach $200. The title fee is $8.50, plus processing fees.
Registration and inspections in Mostly Jackson County, with parts in Clay and Platte counties
Where to title: Any Missouri Department of Revenue license office.
Inspections: Kansas City isn’t in Missouri’s emissions-testing area (that’s only the St. Louis region), but the statewide safety inspection rules apply. A safety inspection is required at titling, though newer vehicles with under 150,000 miles may be exempt. Emissions testing is required in St. Louis City and St. Louis, St. Charles, and Jefferson counties.
