Taxes and fees for Chicago car buyers

Here’s what Chicago buyers should expect on a dealer purchase. Rates were checked against official sources in October 2026 and can change, so confirm with your local office before you buy.

  • Sales tax: At a Chicago dealer, tax is the combined rate for the dealer’s location: 6.25% state, 1.25% city, 1.25% NITA (since August 1, 2026), plus Cook County tax. If you buy outside Chicago, you also owe the city’s 1.25% use tax on titled vehicles.
  • How Illinois taxes vehicles: Dealer sales in Illinois are taxed at the 6.25% state rate plus local taxes at the dealer’s location. Since August 1, 2026, a Northern Illinois Transit Authority tax of 1.25% applies in Cook County (1.00% in the collar counties).
  • Trade-in credit: Yes. Your trade-in reduces the taxable price. Dealer doc fees are taxable.
  • Dealer doc fees: Illinois caps doc fees by statute at a base amount that’s adjusted for inflation each year. The contract must say the fee is not an official fee and not required by law.
  • Title and registration: The title fee is $165, and standard passenger registration is about $151 a year. Dealers must file your title and registration within 20 days of the sale.

Registration and inspections in Cook County

Where to title: Illinois Secretary of State facility (dealers file within 20 days).

Inspections: Chicago is in the Illinois emissions-testing area. Most gas vehicles 1996 and newer are tested once they’re four years old, generally every two years. Emissions testing applies only in the Chicago and Metro-East St. Louis areas, generally every two years once a vehicle is four years old.

Good to know in Chicago

  • Chicago residents must buy a City Vehicle Sticker within 30 days of acquiring a vehicle.
  • Private-party buyers titling in Cook County also owe the county’s Non-Retailer Use Tax ($225, $175, or $90 depending on the vehicle’s age).
  • Illinois has no legal 3-day right to cancel a car purchase.

Buying from another state

If you buy out of state, you file Form RUT-25 and pay Illinois use tax within 30 days, at the rate for your registration address, with credit for tax paid to the other state. We handle the logistics and make sure the dealer’s paperwork matches your home state’s rules.
