Taxes and fees for Grand Rapids car buyers

Here’s what Grand Rapids buyers should expect on a dealer purchase. Rates were checked against official sources in October 2026 and can change, so confirm with your local office before you buy.

  • Sales tax: Grand Rapids pays Michigan’s flat 6%, with no city or county add-on. For 2026, a trade-in cuts the taxable price by its agreed value or $12,000, whichever is less.
  • How Michigan taxes vehicles: Michigan charges a flat 6% sales or use tax on a vehicle purchase. The state does not allow cities, counties, or other local units to add a sales tax, so the rate is the same everywhere in Michigan.
  • Trade-in credit: Yes, but with a cap: for 2026, Michigan reduces the taxable price by the agreed trade-in value or $12,000, whichever is less. The cap rises $1,000 each January 1, and once it would exceed $14,000 (in 2029), the full trade-in value becomes credited.
  • Dealer doc fees: Michigan caps the dealer documentary preparation fee at $280 or 5% of the vehicle’s cash price, whichever is less. The state adjusts the cap for inflation every two years, and the $280 figure was set in January 2025.
  • Title and registration: The title fee is $15, and you have 15 days from the sale to transfer the title or pay a $15 late fee. Registration for a 1984 or newer vehicle is figured from its MSRP (the ad valorem fee), and the fee drops by a percentage each year for three years; a standard plate costs $5 the first time, and electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles pay an extra $267 or $113.

Registration and inspections in Kent County

Where to title: Title and register at any Michigan Secretary of State office; the department says 90% of in-person visits take 20 minutes or less on average. Dealers usually handle the paperwork for you..

Inspections: Grand Rapids has no safety or emissions inspection.

  • Registration renewals can be done online, by mail, or at Secretary of State self-service stations in Meijer and Kroger stores.
  • Michigan’s lemon law covers defects reported within the warranty term or 1 year from delivery, whichever comes first. Michigan credits sales or use tax legally due and paid to another state at the time of purchase. We handle the logistics and make sure the dealer’s paperwork matches your home state’s rules.
