Columbus buyers have a growing dealer market around Easton, Hilliard, and the rest of the metro area, and Cincinnati and Cleveland are both within easy reach. Ohio taxes by your home county, so we can shop all of it.

Taxes and fees for Columbus car buyers
Here’s what Columbus buyers should expect on a dealer purchase. Rates were checked against official sources in October 2026 and can change, so confirm with your local office before you buy.
- Sales tax: Franklin County residents pay 8.0% (5.75% state plus 2.25% county). In Ohio, a trade-in reduces the tax only on a new-vehicle purchase.
- How Ohio taxes vehicles: Ohio charges 5.75% state sales tax plus the county rate for your county of residence, not the dealer’s county. It’s collected by the county Clerk of Courts title office.
- Trade-in credit: Only on new vehicles. A trade-in reduces the taxable price when you buy new, but not when you buy used.
- Dealer doc fees: Ohio caps doc fees at the lesser of an inflation-adjusted amount (recalculated each year) or 10% of the contract price, and the fee must be stated in writing.
- Title and registration: Titles are issued by county Clerk of Courts offices. The title fee is $18 in most counties. If a dealer hasn’t gotten a title in your name within 40 days, you have the right to cancel the deal.
Registration and inspections in Mostly Franklin County, with parts in Delaware and Fairfield counties
Where to title: Franklin County Clerk of Courts title office.
Inspections: Franklin County isn’t an E-Check county, so there’s no emissions test. E-Check emissions testing applies only in seven northeast Ohio counties.
Good to know in Columbus
- Tax follows your county of residence, not the dealer’s county.
- Ohio’s lemon law covers new vehicles for the first 12 months or 18,000 miles.
Buying from another state
If you buy out of state, you pay Ohio tax at your home-county rate when you title. Vehicles with out-of-state titles need a VIN inspection. We handle the logistics and make sure the dealer’s paperwork matches your home state’s rules.
What it costs
Our service is a flat fee: $900 for Standard Concierge, $1,000 with trade-in help, and $1,200 for luxury vehicles over $120,000. You’ll know the total up front. See pricing for details.
