  • How Colorado taxes vehicles: Colorado’s state sales tax on vehicles is 2.9%, and local sales taxes for where you register the vehicle are added on top.
  • Trade-in credit: Yes. The fair market value of your trade-in is excluded from the taxable price.
  • Dealer doc fees: Starting January 1, 2026 (HB25-1090), advertised prices must include all mandatory fees except government charges, so a dealer’s doc fee should already be in the advertised price.
  • Title and registration: Register within 60 days of purchase. Late fees are $25 a month, up to $100. The title fee is $7.20, and annual registration includes Specific Ownership Tax, which is based on the vehicle’s original MSRP and steps down with age.
