Buying a car on Oahu means a limited local inventory and island pricing. We compare Honolulu dealers and, when it makes sense, mainland options, including the cost of shipping and Hawaii registration.
Car Concierge is a licensed auto broker and car buying concierge based in Minnesota, working for buyers in Honolulu and across the country. We don’t take money from dealers. You pay one flat fee, and our only job is getting you the right vehicle at the best price.

Taxes and fees for Honolulu car buyers
Here’s what Honolulu buyers should expect on a dealer purchase. Rates were checked against official sources in October 2026 and can change, so confirm with your local office before you buy.
- Sales tax: Oahu’s General Excise Tax is 4.5% (4% state plus a 0.5% county surcharge through 2030). A dealer can pass it on to you at up to 4.712%.
- How Hawaii taxes vehicles: Hawaii has no sales tax. Instead it charges a 4% General Excise Tax on the business, and Oahu adds a 0.5% county surcharge. Dealers may visibly pass it on to you, at up to 4.712%.
- Trade-in credit: We confirm how your trade-in is handled on the dealer’s paperwork before you sign.
- Title and registration: Registration is run by each county. In Honolulu, you have 30 days from the transfer date to transfer ownership. The fee is $10, or $60 if late.

- A vehicle shipped from the mainland needs a permit or Hawaii registration within 30 days of arriving on Oahu.
- Hawaii’s lemon law covers the warranty term, 2 years from delivery, or 24,000 miles, whichever comes first.
Buying from another state
A vehicle shipped from the mainland needs an out-of-state permit or Hawaii registration within 30 days of arrival, and must pass a safety inspection first. We handle the logistics and make sure the dealer’s paperwork matches your home state’s rules.
What it costs
Our service is a flat fee: $900 for Standard Concierge, $1,000 with trade-in help, and $1,200 for luxury vehicles over $120,000. You’ll know the total up front. See pricing for details.
