Taxes and fees for Los Angeles car buyers

Here’s what Los Angeles buyers should expect on a dealer purchase. Rates were checked against official sources in October 2026 and can change, so confirm with your local office before you buy.

  • Sales tax: The City of Los Angeles rate is 10.25% as of October 1, 2026, after LA County voters approved Measure ER. California charges the rate for the address where you register the car, and a trade-in doesn’t reduce the taxable price.
  • How California taxes vehicles: California’s base sales tax rate is 7.25%, and local district taxes are added on top. For vehicles, the rate depends on the address where the car is registered, not where the dealer is.
  • Trade-in credit: No. California taxes the full selling price, and the trade-in allowance doesn’t reduce it. Dealer doc fees are taxable too.
  • Dealer doc fees: California caps dealer doc fees at $85 for dealers in DMV’s electronic filing program, or $70 for dealers that aren’t. The fee can’t be presented as a government fee.
  • Title and registration: Transfer fees must be paid within 10 days of the sale, and dealers usually submit the paperwork for you. Registration includes a $76 registration fee, a vehicle license fee of 0.65% of value, and a Transportation Improvement Fee of $33–$231 depending on value.

Registration and inspections in Los Angeles County

Where to title: Title and register at a California DMV field office, though many dealers are authorized to transfer the title and issue temporary registration for you. Transfer fees are due within 10 days of the sale..

Inspections: LA County requires a smog check every two years at renewal, but gas and hybrid cars are exempt for their first eight model years and pay a smog abatement fee instead. An out-of-state car needs a California smog certificate and a VIN verification to register. California has no safety inspection, but a smog certificate is generally needed at change of ownership and every two years. Gas vehicles less than four model years old pay an $8 smog transfer fee instead of a smog check, and EVs are exempt.

Good to know in Los Angeles

  • The Metro ExpressLanes on the I-10 and I-110 require a FasTrak transponder, and carpools need a FasTrak Flex set to the right occupancy.
  • Starting October 1, 2026, the CARS Act (SB 766) gives buyers a 3-day right to cancel on certain used-car purchases.

Buying from another state

If you buy out of state, you pay use tax to DMV at your registration address’s rate, with credit for sales tax paid elsewhere. A vehicle with under 7,500 miles counts as new and must be certified for California emissions. We handle the logistics and make sure the dealer’s paperwork matches your home state’s rules.

What it costs

Our service is a flat fee: $900 for Standard Concierge, $1,000 with trade-in help, and $1,200 for luxury vehicles over $120,000. You’ll know the total up front. See pricing for details.
