Boise’s dealer inventory can be thin for popular models, so many buyers end up looking at Salt Lake City, Spokane, or Portland. We do that search for you and handle the negotiation and delivery.

Taxes and fees for Boise car buyers
Here’s what Boise buyers should expect on a dealer purchase. Rates were checked against official sources in October 2026 and can change, so confirm with your local office before you buy.
- Sales tax: Boise buyers pay Idaho’s 6% state sales tax only, since Boise doesn’t have a local option sales tax.
- How Idaho taxes vehicles: Idaho charges a 6% sales tax on vehicles. Local option sales taxes exist only in certain resort cities.
- Trade-in credit: Yes. Your trade-in allowance reduces the taxable price if the dealer takes the vehicle into inventory for resale. Doc fees are taxable.
- Dealer doc fees: Idaho rules require dealer doc fees to be listed separately and identified as document preparation fees that are subject to sales tax.
- Title and registration: The title fee is $14 plus county fees. Title paperwork must be filed within 30 days, or a $20 late penalty applies.
Registration and inspections in Ada County
Where to title: Ada County Assessor’s Motor Vehicle offices, or ITD Vehicle Services in Boise.
Inspections: None. Ada County’s emissions testing ended when Idaho’s repeal took effect July 1, 2023. Idaho has no emissions or safety inspection. The state ended emissions testing (including Ada County’s) on July 1, 2023.
Good to know in Boise
- The Ada County Highway District adds an annual registration fee: $40 at 1–2 years old, $36 at 3–7 years, and $24 over 7 years (through 2028).
- Idaho’s lemon law covers the warranty term, 24,000 miles, or 2 years from delivery, whichever comes first.
Buying from another state
Idaho credits sales tax paid to another state, and you owe the difference if that state’s rate was lower. A VIN inspection is required for vehicles coming from out of state. We handle the logistics and make sure the dealer’s paperwork matches your home state’s rules.
What it costs
Our service is a flat fee: $900 for Standard Concierge, $1,000 with trade-in help, and $1,200 for luxury vehicles over $120,000. You’ll know the total up front. See pricing for details.
