Taxes and fees for Seattle car buyers
Here’s what Seattle buyers should expect on a dealer purchase. Rates were checked against official sources in October 2026 and can change, so confirm with your local office before you buy.
- Sales tax: For October through December 2026, the dealer rate in Seattle is 10.55% (6.5% state plus 4.05% local), plus the 0.5% motor vehicle tax, for 11.05%. The 8% luxury tax applies to the part of the price above $102,000.
- How Washington taxes vehicles: Washington charges 6.5% state sales tax plus local rates, and a separate motor vehicle sales tax that rose from 0.3% to 0.5% on January 1, 2026.
- Trade-in credit: Yes. A like-kind trade-in shown on the sales agreement is excluded from the taxable price (but not for the luxury tax).
- Dealer doc fees: Washington caps doc fees at $200. The dealer must disclose the fee in writing, state that it’s negotiable, and list it separately from the price.
- Title and registration: You have 15 days to transfer ownership. After that the penalty is $50, plus $2 a day, up to $125. Dealers file the paperwork with the Department of Licensing for you.
Registration and inspections in King County
Where to title: Washington DOL vehicle licensing offices (dealers file for you).
Inspections: None. Washington ended emissions checks statewide in 2020. Washington ended emissions checks statewide on January 1, 2020, and there’s no safety inspection.
