New York City has dealers in every borough and across Long Island, Westchester, and New Jersey, but few New Yorkers have time to visit them. We shop the whole region, negotiate, and coordinate delivery.
Car Concierge is a licensed auto broker and car buying concierge based in Minnesota, working for buyers in New York City and across the country. We don’t take money from dealers. You pay one flat fee, and our only job is getting you the right vehicle at the best price.

Taxes and fees for New York City car buyers
Here’s what New York City buyers should expect on a dealer purchase. Rates were checked against official sources in October 2026 and can change, so confirm with your local office before you buy.
- Sales tax: NYC residents pay 8.875% (4% state, 4.5% city, and the 0.375% MCTD surcharge). The rate is based on where you live, so buying in New Jersey or upstate doesn’t change it.
- How New York taxes vehicles: New York charges 4% state sales tax plus county or city rates. For individuals, the rate is based on where you live, not where the dealer is.
- Trade-in credit: Yes. Tax is due only on the price after your trade-in credit.
- Dealer doc fees: New York caps the dealer’s processing fee at $175. It must be printed on the invoice as optional and not a DMV fee, and you can choose to submit the paperwork yourself.
- Title and registration: The title fee is $50, and registration is based on vehicle weight. A New York dealer can register, title, and issue plates for you.
Registration and inspections in New York, Kings, Queens, Bronx, and Richmond counties
Where to title: The selling dealer, or a NYS DMV office in your borough by appointment.
Inspections: The New York State annual safety inspection and OBD-II emissions check apply. New York requires an annual safety inspection plus an OBD-II emissions check. Vehicles less than two model years old are exempt from emissions.
Good to know in New York City
- NYC registrations carry a city vehicle use tax of $30 every two years and a supplemental MCTD fee of $50 every two years, on top of the base fee.
- New York’s used-car lemon law gives buyers a dealer warranty on vehicles up to 100,000 miles bought for $1,500 or more.
Buying from another state
If you buy out of state, you may owe New York sales tax when you register. Form DTF-804 claims credit for tax paid to the other state. We handle the logistics and make sure the dealer’s paperwork matches your home state’s rules.
What it costs
Our service is a flat fee: $900 for Standard Concierge, $1,000 with trade-in help, and $1,200 for luxury vehicles over $120,000. You’ll know the total up front. See pricing for details.
