Taxes and fees for Jersey City car buyers

Here’s what Jersey City buyers should expect on a dealer purchase. Rates were checked against official sources in October 2026 and can change, so confirm with your local office before you buy.

  • Sales tax: Jersey City’s rate is New Jersey’s 6.625%. Jersey City is an Urban Enterprise Zone, but vehicles are taxed at the full rate, not the reduced 3.3125%.
  • How New Jersey taxes vehicles: New Jersey’s sales tax on a vehicle is 6.625%, with no local add-on. Urban Enterprise Zone sellers can charge a reduced 3.3125% on many items, but motor vehicles must be taxed at the full 6.625%, and zero emission vehicles have also been taxed at the full rate since July 1, 2025.
  • Trade-in credit: Yes. A trade-in reduces the taxable amount when you trade a motor vehicle to a registered dealer that takes it for resale, and the purchase and trade-in contracts are signed at the same time.
  • Dealer doc fees: New Jersey does not set a dollar cap on dealer documentary fees. Dealers must itemize each documentary service and its price in writing on the sale document, in at least 10-point type, and may not say a government agency requires the service; the fee is also part of the taxable sales price.
  • Title and registration: A New Jersey dealer typically handles your title and registration as part of the sale; otherwise, you must title the car within 10 days or face a penalty. The NJ MVC title fee is $60, or $85 with one lien, and a never-titled new vehicle gets a four-year registration.

Registration and inspections in Hudson County

Where to title: Jersey City has an NJ MVC Vehicle Center at 438 Summit Avenue, and new registrations and title transfers there require an appointment. Dealers usually handle the title and registration for you..

Inspections: A new car gets a five-year inspection, then emissions inspections every two years. Bring your license, registration, and New Jersey insurance card to the inspection station.

Good to know in Jersey City

  • All Port Authority crossings, including the Holland Tunnel, are cashless, so you pay by E-ZPass or Tolls by Mail.
  • Since July 1, 2024, zero emission vehicles registered in New Jersey pay an annual fee on top of the regular registration fee.
  • New Jersey’s lemon law covers new cars for 24,000 miles or two years from delivery, whichever comes first. You generally need three repair attempts for the same defect, one attempt for a serious safety defect, or 20 total days out of service.

Buying from another state

If you buy out of state, you pay New Jersey sales or use tax when you title the car with the MVC. New Jersey credits sales tax legally paid to another state, and if you paid less than New Jersey’s tax, you pay the difference; new residents have 60 days to title and register a vehicle. We handle the logistics and make sure the dealer’s paperwork matches your home state’s rules.

What it costs

Our service is a flat fee: $900 for Standard Concierge, $1,000 with trade-in help, and $1,200 for luxury vehicles over $120,000. You’ll know the total up front. See pricing for details.
