Taxes and fees for Raleigh car buyers

Here’s what Raleigh buyers should expect on a dealer purchase. Rates were checked against official sources in October 2026 and can change, so confirm with your local office before you buy.

  • Sales tax: You’ll pay North Carolina’s 3% Highway Use Tax on the price minus your trade-in. There’s no local add-on.
  • How North Carolina taxes vehicles: North Carolina charges a 3% Highway Use Tax instead of sales tax when a title is transferred. There’s no county or local add-on.
  • Trade-in credit: Yes. Your trade-in is subtracted before the 3% tax is calculated.
  • Dealer doc fees: North Carolina doesn’t cap doc fees, but the dealer must post the fee on a large sign in the sales area, include it in advertised prices, and list it separately on your bill of sale.
  • Title and registration: Apply for title within 28 days of purchase. The title fee is $66.75 and annual registration is $46.25. Dealers handle the paperwork for their own sales.
